According to US media news on July 4, the Dutch company Lightyear is developing a solar electric car Lightyear One. According to reports, the car can travel for several months without charging, making it the first four-wheel drive home solar electric car.
According to Lightyear, the total annual mileage of all fuel vehicles in the world is one light-year, or 9.5 trillion kilometers. Lightyear's goal is to accelerate the popularity of electric vehicles, so that the mileage of electric vehicles will reach one light years by 2030.
Since Lightyear One is priced at $135,000 (approximately RMB 917,500), Lightyear currently only receives five bookings. Lightyear's goal is to reach 200 bookings next year, when production will begin.
Eindhoven Polytechnics alumni plan to develop and launch a Lightyear One solar electric vehicle that is similar in cost to a regular car. Lightyear was initiated by students at the Eindhoven University of Technology solar project. These students won the 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, and this year they compete again. One of the members, Tesse Hartjes, said their team used the knowledge of the student era to create a commercial solar car. The car parts come from the Netherlands and abroad and will be assembled in Helmond, South Holland.
Hartjes said that building a brand new car usually requires a brand cost of 1 billion euros (about 7.718 billion yuan), and Lightyear plans to build the car with millions of euros. Since the existing car brand is influenced by its standard models and its image, Lightyear is more free in this respect and therefore has a greater advantage. There are currently several major investors in Lightyear.
A major problem with the introduction of solar-powered electric vehicles in the Netherlands is that the country's sunshine is not abundant enough to increase sufficient solar energy. But Lightyear thinks this is not a problem. Lightyear said that the Netherlands has enough sunshine for Lightyear One to drive 10,000 kilometers a year. Thereafter, the car can be charged on the charging rod. Hartjes also said that if Tesla had the technology before launching the electric car, they now have solar cars.
